What is En Primeur?

En Primeur, also known as “wine futures” in the USA, is the practice of buying wine while it's still ageing in the barrel, before it's bottled and released – typically around 18 months before the wine is physically available.

The tradition is most closely associated with Bordeaux. En Primeur may not always be the cheapest time to buy but it is always the earliest access to a vintage.
