Understanding Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac, Bordeaux
The vineyards of Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste are planted on the deep gravel soils typical of the Pauillac appellation. These well-drained soils are ideal for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon, which thrives here, imparting the wines with their signature structure and depth. The vineyard practices are a blend of tradition and modern techniques, with a commitment to sustainable viticulture and respect for the terroir. The average age of the vines is over 35 years, contributing significantly to the complexity and concentration of the grapes. At the winery, the approach to vinification marries tradition with innovation. The grapes are carefully handpicked and sorted, ensuring only the best quality fruit is used for vinification. The fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats sized according to grape parcels for individual and precise vinification. This is followed by ageing for 16 to 18 months in two-thirds new French oak. This maturation process adds subtle oak nuances while respecting the intrinsic qualities of the fruit. Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste displays ripe dark fruit, tobacco and earthy undertones and a touch of oak in a finessed palate with firm tannins. This wine has considerable ageing potential.
