A brief history of Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, Rouge Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux
Located in the Graves region, Château Smith Haut Lafitte is celebrated for its exceptional terroir and the remarkable quality of both its red and white wines. The history of this esteemed estate dates to the 14th century, but it was in 1720 when Scotsman George Smith acquired the property, giving it his name and building its legacy. Smith Haut Lafitte gained fame in the 18th century, especially for its superb white wines, which were highly regarded by the English nobility. During the 1959 Graves Classification, the house was ranked as Grand Cru Classé for its red wine. The modern era of the estate began with the Cathiard family's acquisition in 1990, who invested significantly in revitalising the vineyards and winery, embracing organic and biodynamic farming practices to enhance the quality of their wines. Their efforts have elevated Smith Haut Lafitte to the forefront of Bordeaux winemaking, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and environmental stewardship. The vineyard is planted with grape varieties typical of the region: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc for the reds, and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Sauvignon Gris for the whites. The soil composition, a mix of gravel and limestone, contributes to the complexity and minerality of the wines produced here.
