A brief history of Petrus, Pomerol, Bordeaux

Petrus, situated in the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux, France, is one of the most illustrious wine estates in the world, renowned for its exceptional Merlot-based wines. The estate's history dates back to the mid-19th century, but it was not until the 20th century, under the stewardship of the Moueix family, that Petrus began to gain its legendary status. The estate's reputation for producing wines of extraordinary quality and complexity, with unparalleled ageing potential, has established Petrus as a symbol of winemaking excellence and luxury. The vineyard's unique terroir, characterised by an iron-rich clay soil known as "crasse de fer," is considered a crucial factor in the wine's distinctive character and depth.

Petrus, Pomerol, Bordeaux overview

Petrus’ holdings are almost exclusively planted with Merlot, with a tiny fraction of Cabernet Franc. This practice makes it one of the few estates in Bordeaux to focus so predominantly on Merlot. This varietal thrives in the estate's clay-rich soil, producing wines that are opulent, dense, and incredibly layered. The commitment to low yields, meticulous attention to vineyard management, and a selective harvesting approach ensure that only the finest grapes make it into the final blend. Petrus's unparalleled status among wine connoisseurs and collectors is not only a testament to its exceptional quality but also to the meticulous care and passion that define its production. The wine's scarcity, combined with its reputation for excellence, has made Petrus one of the most prestigious and sought-after wines in the world, embodying the pinnacle of Merlot's potential and the art of Bordeaux winemaking.

Understanding Petrus, Pomerol, Bordeaux

The vines at Petrus are very old age by Bordeaux standards and only replanted after 70 years, yielding top-quality fruit that adds to the intensity of the wine. The grapes are meticulously hand-harvested in the afternoon to avoid dilution from morning dew, berry-by-berry, and sorted so that only the finest see vinification. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks to preserve the purity of the fruit, followed by ageing in half-new French oak barrels for 18 to 20 months to enhance the wine's complexity and longevity. Petrus displays complex, ripe dark fruits, truffle, violet, spice, vanilla and chocolate underpinned by a subtle minerality and earthiness in a deep, plush palate with finessed tannins. This Grand Vin can age gracefully for decades, developing even greater complexity over time.
