A brief history of Chateau Ausone, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux

Château Ausone is a symbol of winemaking excellence in Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux, an area renowned for its extraordinary wines. This legendary estate, with roots stretching back to the Roman era, is named after the Roman poet Ausonius, hinting at its ancient and historic past. Over the centuries, Château Ausone has been synonymous with the heights of viticultural and winemaking tradition in Bordeaux, upheld by generations of vintners. Located across seven hectares of hillsides of Saint-Émilion, Château Ausone has been a part of the region's winemaking story since ancient times. However, it was the Vauthier family's stewardship, beginning in the 20th century, that truly catapulted Ausone to its iconic status. In 1955, when Saint-Émilion launched its independent classification system, Château Ausone gained the highest level of Premier Grand Cru Classé "A". It retained this status until the 2021 vintage. The following year it elected to withdraw from the system and release its wines under the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru category. Under the care of the Vauthiers, the estate has consistently produced wines that are a profound expression of the unique terroir. The vineyards, a blend of old and new vines, are cultivated with a focus on quality over quantity, ensuring that each vintage of Ausone showcases the estate's heritage and expertise.
