A brief history of Chateau Cheval Blanc, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux
Château Cheval Blanc, a revered name in the Saint-Émilion appellation, represents the apex of winemaking artistry in the Right Bank of Bordeaux. This illustrious estate, with a history dating back to the 19th century, has long been celebrated for its innovative approach to viticulture and winemaking. Over the years, the estate has evolved, yet it has always remained true to its core philosophy of producing wines that perfectly express the character of its diverse soil types. Its terroir particularly suits Cabernet Franc and Merlot which are its leading varieties. The 20th century saw significant investments in vineyard management and winery modernisation, further consolidating Cheval Blanc's reputation for quality and innovation. In 1998, oenophiles and friends Bernard Arnault and Baron Albert Frère, purchased this stellar château, injecting a modern touch while respecting the château’s legacy. The duo oversaw the construction of a modern cellar but left the winemaking team to carry on with their legendary vinification processes. Cheval Blanc's unique terroir, straddling the border of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, has played a pivotal role in shaping its distinctive wines, earning it the prestigious status of Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) in the 1955 classification.
