The Malet-Roquefort family, stewards of this venerable estate for generations, has been instrumental in shaping its destiny, combining respect for tradition with a dynamic approach to modern viticulture and winemaking. Its wines are Merlot-dominant with small proportions of Cabernet Franc. In the original 1955 Saint-Émilion classification, the estate was rated Premier Grand Cru Classé. Understanding Chateau La Gaffeliere Premier Grand Cru Classe B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux
The Malet-Roquefort family emphasises the importance of maintaining the health and biodiversity of the vineyard, ensuring that each vine is nurtured to express the full potential of the terroir. This approach extends to the winery, where a blend of traditional methods and modern technology facilitates the creation of wines that are true to their origins and the estate’s heritage. Grapes are hand-picked to ensure only the best are vinified. In the winery, the grapes see fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, a stage that promotes fruit purity. Softening malolactic fermentation takes place in a barrel. The wine then ages for 12 to 15 months in half-new French oak. This Grand Vin features ripe red fruit and subtle hints of spice, vanilla, toast and earth in a finessed palate with silky tannins. This wine promises excellent ageing capacity.
