A brief history of Chateau Troplong Mondot Premier Grand Cru Classe B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux
Château Troplong Mondot, an esteemed estate located in the Saint-Émilion appellation of Bordeaux, France, traces its lineage back to the early 18th century. Originally part of a larger estate, it was established as its own entity in 1745 by the influential Mondot family. The château experienced significant growth and recognition in the 19th century, particularly under the visionary leadership of Raymond Troplong, who expanded the estate and enhanced its reputation. This period marked the foundation of Troplong Mondot’s legacy as a producer of exceptional Bordeaux wines. In 1980, the Valette family acquired the estate, ushering in a new era of modernisation and quality improvement. Their efforts were rewarded when Troplong Mondot was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé B status, solidifying its position as a top-tier producer within the prestigious Saint-Émilion classification. In 2017, the estate was sold to French Insurance group SOCR. The estate’s vineyards are located at slightly higher altitudes than most Saint-Émillon holdings. Merlot is the dominant grape complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Understanding Chateau Troplong Mondot Premier Grand Cru Classe B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux
Changes have been afoot in the vineyard since the new owners took over. Fruit is picked earlier for a more finessed wine and oak treatment in the winery is more measured. Fermentation takes place in both traditional oak vats and modern stainless-steel tanks, allowing for precise control over the winemaking process. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new, to enhance its complexity. Château Troplong Mondot features ripe black fruit, liquorice and mocha, complemented by a silky texture and a finish that lingers on the palate. This first wine possesses significant ageing potential.
