A brief history of Chateau Calon Segur 3eme Cru Classe, Saint-Estephe, Bordeaux

Château Calon Ségur is a legendary estate in the Saint-Estèphe appellation deeply intertwined with the history of Bordeaux winemaking. Its origins trace back to the early 18th century, making it one of the oldest estates in the region. The château's name is a nod to its historical roots, 'Calon' referring to the small boats used in the Middle Ages to ferry timber across the Gironde estuary. This historic estate has passed through several hands with the most recent owners being the Gasqueton family. They sold Château Calon Ségur in 2012 to subsidiary of the Crédit Mutuel Arkéa group, Suravenir. The modern era of Calon Ségur began with extensive renovations and technological upgrades, further elevating the quality of its wines. Despite these changes, the estate has consistently maintained its commitment to expressing the distinct character of Saint-Estèphe terroir. The vineyards are predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, each variety contributing to the complexity and elegance of the Calon Ségur wine. The estate’s heart-shaped label, a symbol of passion and dedication, has become an emblematic feature.
