A brief history of Chateau Phelan Segur, Saint-Estephe, Bordeaux

Château Phélan Ségur, a beacon of viticultural heritage in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, was founded in the early 19th century by Bernard Phélan, an Irish wine merchant. The estate quickly gained recognition for its quality wines, combining the vineyards of Clos de Garramey and Ségur into one entity. Over the years, Phélan Ségur has remained in the hands of families deeply rooted in the Bordeaux wine community, including a period of ownership by the Delon family, proprietors of Leoville Las Cases. Since 2018, under the stewardship of the Famille Pierre et Philippe Van de Vyvere, the estate continues to honour its historic legacy while embracing modern viticulture and winemaking techniques. The house is regarded as one of the finer estates not included in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.
