A brief history of Chateau Leoville Las Cases 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien, Bordeaux

Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the most iconic and prestigious wine estates in Bordeaux, situated in the esteemed Saint-Julien appellation. With a history that dates back to the 17th century, the estate was once part of the much larger Léoville estate, which was divided into three distinct properties in the 19th century: Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Léoville Poyferré, and Château Léoville Barton. In the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Château Léoville Las Cases was awarded the prestigious Second Growth status, although many argue that its quality often rivals that of the First Growths. Today, it is recognised for its powerful, long-lived wines that epitomize the essence of Saint-Julien. The property has remained under the stewardship of the Delon family since the early 20th century, with the family’s meticulous approach to vineyard management and winemaking being integral to its continued success.

Chateau Leoville Las Cases 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien, Bordeaux overview

Château Léoville Las Cases encompasses 98 hectares of vineyards, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside smaller amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The estate is located just north of the village of Saint-Julien and benefits from a unique microclimate and terroir, including gravelly soils that provide excellent drainage, essential for cultivating high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are divided into small plots, each managed with precision to ensure that the best characteristics of each terroir are reflected in the final blend. The Grand Vin of Château Léoville Las Cases is renowned for its power, complexity, and capacity for extended ageing. The estate's second wine, Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases, offers a more approachable expression while maintaining the elegance and structure typical of the château.

Understanding Chateau Leoville Las Cases 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien, Bordeaux

Château Léoville Las Cases is known for producing wines of remarkable depth, structure, and longevity. Vinification is carried out with great precision, beginning with plot-by-plot fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve the unique characteristics of each vineyard parcel. The wine is then aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, with around 80% new oak used to impart complexity and integrate the tannins. On the palate, Château Léoville Las Cases reveals concentrated black fruit, such as cassis and blackberry, layered with tobacco, graphite, and cedar notes. The wine has a firm tannic structure and vibrant acidity, making it one of the longest-lived wines in the Médoc. With age, it develops even more complexity, showcasing secondary and tertiary notes of truffle, leather, and cigar box, making it a quintessential example of the power and elegance of Saint-Julien wines.
