Ducru-Beaucaillou is an acclaimed estate found in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, France. The château's roots stretch back to the early 18th century, with the estate's foundation laid in 1720. It was named after the beautiful large stones (beau caillou) found in its unique terroir, which are believed to play a crucial role in the vineyard's drainage, thus contributing significantly to the quality of its wines. Elevated to a Second Cru Classé status in the prestigious 1855 Bordeaux classification, Ducru-Beaucaillou has been under the stewardship of the Borie family since the 1940s. Following careful work in the vineyard, plots are vinified separately to promote unique terroir expression in the wine. The winemaking process is characterised by meticulous grape selection, with a focus on achieving optimal ripeness and health of the fruit. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, followed by extended ageing in French oak barrels, up to 80% of which is new. This regimen ensures that the wines exhibit both strength and elegance, with a potential for graceful ageing over decades. Ducru-Beaucaillou features layers of blackberry, cassis and plum, interwoven with hints of tobacco, cedar and spice in a silky, balanced palate with refined tannins. This Grand Vin boasts outstanding cellaring capacity.
