An introduction to Domaine Bonneau du Martray, Charlemagne Grand Cru, Burgundy
Considered one of the greatest vineyards in Burgundy, Corton-Charlemagne is produced across much of the top portion of the oval-shaped Montagne de Corton hill. The domaine’s vines are situated across En Charlemagne and Le Charlemagne. The vines facing west enjoy sunshine from mid-morning until sunset, which is a unique exposure in Burgundy. The domaine’s large 9.5-hectare vineyard runs from top to bottom of the hill, and boasts various distinctive terroirs due to differences in the thickness of the clays, silts, marls and different types of limestone.

Understanding Domaine Bonneau du Martray, Charlemagne Grand Cru, Burgundy
Produced from biodynamically farmed Chardonnay grapes, this wine is fermented in stainless steel and casks and then matured on its fine lees for two winters in oak barrels with 33% new wood. After this, it is racked into stainless steel, and returned to casks for two months to settle. The wine’s bouquet is exceptionally elegant and pure, melding notes of green apple, white flowers, and wet stone. The medium to full-bodied mouthfeel blends racy acidity and abundant minerals with well-delineated flavours, in a focused palate with a chiseled finish. Allen Meadows of Burghound has praised its ‘stunningly good complexity’ and has described it as ‘sublime.’
