Nuits-Saint-Georges is both an appellation and a wine region, the second largest commune in the Côte d'Or producing Premier Cru, Village and Regional wines. Planted mainly with Pinot Noir, a small amount of white wine is made from Chardonnay. With a network of growers across Burgundy’s best sites, each vintage Maison Roche de Bellene decides which specific parcels to use for the blend. The grapes for this wine are sourced from several different old-vine parcels on east-facing clay-limestone soils from across the appellation, including La Charmotte, Aux Chouillets St. Julien and Les Argillats.

Understanding Maison Roche de Bellene, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy

This old vine cuvée is made from hand-harvested and carefully selected Pinot Noir grapes. A proportion of whole bunches is used during the indigenous yeast fermentation, followed by up to 18 months in partly new oak. The wine is usually filtered but not fined, depending on the vintage. Lower yields give this wine great focus and concentration, and firmer tannins. It usually reveals black fruit and smoky spice notes. The wine is approachable after several years in bottle and will reward cellaring for over ten years.
