A brief history of Chateau Lafite Rothschild Premier Cru Classe, Pauillac, Bordeaux
Château Lafite Rothschild is a celebrated estate in the Pauillac region of Bordeaux’s Médoc, producing one of the most expensive and coveted red wines in the world. The estate's roots date back to the 17th century, with the Lafite name first appearing in 1234. Before the French Revolution, it had built a reputation for excellence that earned it the accolade of "The King's Wine" at Versailles and it was classified as one of the four First Growths in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The Rothschild family acquired the château in 1868, marking the beginning of a new era of innovation and distinction. American Founding Father and wine connoisseur Thomas Jefferson included the house in a list of what he regarded as the best Médoc wines. The Lafite Rothschild vineyard encompasses about 120 hectares across Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe. Most holdings are in the former appellation, where plots are split into three parts with each section dedicated to its different wines. Just under three-fifths of the vineyards are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon alongside a substantial quantity of Merlot and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is 40 years old.
