An introduction to Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux

Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is the second wine of the Bordeaux First Growth Château Mouton Rothschild. The wine comes from the same terroir as the Grand Vin but is made from the estate’s younger vines. It provides a more affordable entry point into this First Growth estate and is a popular investment option due to the exceptional value it offers. Usually, about 30% of the total crop at Mouton goes into the production of the second wine but this varies on the vintage.

Understanding Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux

The first vintage of Le Petit Mouton was 1993. At the time, the wine was simply called Le Second Vin de Mouton Rothschild. This changed the following year to Le Petit Mouton, named after Baroness Philippine’s home at the heart of the estate. Like its elder sibling, which has artworks adorning its bottle, the label for Le Petit Mouton was inspired by a drawing by the famous poster artist Jean Carlu. Le Petit Mouton is a blend of the younger vines from the Mouton vineyard, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grapes for Le Petit Mouton are harvested in small open baskets, fermented in the Mouton oak vats, and matured in oak barrels in the traditional way. The wine expresses the elegance and richness of a great Pauillac. Some of Le Petit Mouton’s highest-scoring vintages have been the 2018, 2016, 2015, 2010 and 2009.
